Week on The Produce to the People Farm November Part 2 2015

Our week began with a visit from our Patron Ben Milbourne hosting a group of  journalists from Hong Kong, here as part of a Tourism Tasmania visiting journalists program.  They were very interested in what we do – offering a community solution to a community problem – and we were very happy to show them what we do. Our new veggie beds are looking so fine.  Lots of hard work by Kinglsey and his WFD crew – special shout out to Craig who has been digging like a pro whilst Dennis and Rodney have been clearing the fence lines and Tim has been a watering machine. Tomas has been making bed signs and setting up a capillary matting watering system in the greenhouse.  It is all go.

We had a record number of people through our Emergency Food Relief Food hub on Tuesday – 71 people in one day.  That’s a lot of people we are pleased to be able to assist with fresh produce and pantry staples.  Lots of people with big bills.  Lots of people who, by the time they have paid all their bills, have $40 a fortnight left for food.

Our EFR space has become a place where people come for food but also a chat.  We are very aware that we might be the only people some of our customers interact with from week to week. We become quite attached to our people and this week we were very sad to hear of the passing of one of our regular customers at the food hub who succumbed to his chronic illness. RIP.

As well as growing on The Farm we receive produce from a number of places, one savvy member of the public saw a paddock of broccoli was going to be ploughed back into the ground and hopped in there and saved us a few bags full.  It was MUCH appreciated.  It raises many questions about supply chain and food waste and contracts and the sometimes utter madness of the food system.
