It’s been a pretty amazing 2016.
We’ve very much settled into our new home on The Farm at Burnie High – in fact we celebrated our two year anniversary there this year – that’s seven years PttP has been around, two of those on The Farm – we hope we will be able to stay for years to come as our model of growing, educating and giving really does work so well.
We have expanded our growing space – then contracted it due to weather – all that rain! – and the loss of staff members. We need to give such huge thanks to Kim who was our Farm Manager for the first part of this journey. Unfortunately due to lack of funding we had to set her free and that has meant we have been without a key person to manage the maintenance, planning and general everyday everything grounds of this size really need. Let’s just say it’s been a challenge but we are muddling through quite well.
We have been absolutely thrilled to receive produce this year from LION and COSTA. All that cheese and all those strawberries!! We continue to send BIG love to GOLDEN GRAIN BAKERY, WOOLWORTHS and SECOND BITE who have generously donated wonderful produce to help us out in the food hub, and to the FARMERS and BACKYARD GROWERS who have also brought in unexpected treasures (like salmon at XMAS time!) In fact we gathered and grew just over 41,000 kilos of produce in 2016.
We’ve also been gathering an awesome team of volunteers. We know we are doing well based on the gold star quality people we attract!
We have had huge numbers through our Burnie gate this year and it has been our greatest pleasure to feed our community. 9342 have accessed our fresh food in 2016 – a 79% increase on last year – remember our food hub is only open two days each week.
Plus approx. another 8000 via our remote food access service that extends from Smithton through to Launceston. These numbers have increased partly due to our home delivery service to elders and others and theassistance we give to local schools.
Produce to the People became an Incorporated Association in 2016 so behind the scenes there is an amazing bunch of people assisting with all manner of things – please head over to our governance page to find out more about them. We thank the Department of Premier and Cabinet for funding us, and WD Booth Trust for enabling us to get our veggie box home delivery project operational – the project that grew so huge we had to put a lid on it. Also a shout out to all the marvelous people who have made individual contributions to our program, every $ helps feed the most vulnerable in our community.
So, what does 2017 hold?
We have plans in place for 2017 and beyond, two versions in fact – one if we get funding for staff and one if we don’t.
Obviously we want to focus on the “WE WILL GET FUNDING TO IMPLEMENT OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE / JOB CREATION” model and we are furiously working behind the scene to make this happen. As always watch this space.
We hope you all enjoy a wonderful summer and remember to grow, gather, give and love the one you’re with xx
